Police powers under the Firearms Act

The Firearms Act 1996 (Tas) was introduced after the Port Arthur massacre, replacing the Guns Act 1991 (Tas). This Act implements by way of legislation the National Firearms Agreement, based on the premise that the ownership and use of a firearm is a privilege.

Categories of firearms license

Your genuine reason for possessing or using a firearm will determine the category of licence for which you may apply. The category of licence will also determine the type of firearm you will be authorised to use and possess.
